The Enterprise Was Already There. The Enterprise Decision Was Not.

A Global Financial Services Organization

Creating clarity, alignment, and shared ownership across a global Legal & Compliance function.

Legal & Compliance did not need more technical expertise. The function needed a shared enterprise direction, a clear definition of success, and ownership for carrying five strategic imperatives forward across regions.

What Looked Settled

The organization already possessed strong Legal & Compliance expertise across the United States, Europe, and Asia. The function was staffed by capable professionals working inside a global financial-services enterprise with an established long-term strategy.

The issue was not whether the team understood law, regulation, or compliance. The issue was whether that expertise had been converted into one enterprise direction.

What Remained Unresolved

  • There was no clearly articulated Legal & Compliance mission, vision, or strategy.
  • Leaders and associates wanted greater clarity, alignment, and shared direction.
  • Stakeholders wanted the function to become more forward-looking and integrated with the business.
  • The function risked operating as an island rather than an enterprise partner.
  • Growth, regulation, and global complexity were putting more pressure on the existing model.

What Hive Partners Surfaced

Eighty confidential interviews with internal and external stakeholders across the U.S., Europe, and Asia validated the gap between strong functional expertise and shared enterprise direction.

Hive Partners then designed a multi-phase working process involving the SteerCo, Extended Leadership, and Europe and Asia leaders. The groups examined historical patterns, reviewed stakeholder insights without rushing to solutions, built a SWOT in shared language, and defined what best-in-class needed to mean for this function – not as a generic aspiration, but in its own operating context.

What Leaders Actually Decided

  • A shared Legal & Compliance mission, vision, and definition of success.
  • A clear three-year strategic direction.
  • Five strategic imperatives to anchor the plan.
  • Objectives, tactics, and cross-functional sub-teams responsible for implementation.
  • A foundation for evolving leadership structure and governance through LMG 2.0.

What Changed Afterwards

The work moved the function from dispersed expertise and unarticulated ambition to a common strategic direction with named ownership. Cross-functional sub-teams were formed to carry the work beyond the offsites, giving the strategy an implementation structure rather than leaving it as a document.

The immediate result was not simply agreement on words. It was a shared architecture for what Legal & Compliance would become and who would move the work forward.

Immediate Decision Outputs

  • A mission, vision, and explicit definition of success.
  • Five strategic imperatives.
  • Defined objectives and tactics.
  • Cross-functional implementation sub-teams.
  • A governance and leadership-development foundation through LMG 2.0.

Perspective

The function did not need Hive Partners to supply the technical answer. It needed a disciplined way to convert distributed expertise and stakeholder expectations into an enterprise decision with ownership.

Pressure-Test A Live Decision

If a capable function has expertise but lacks a shared enterprise direction, start with the decision that the regions or leadership groups are still interpreting differently.
